Why overwinter nucs at all
Four reasons, and any one of them justifies the box.
Replacement queens in March. Queen producers do not ship until the weather in their region cooperates, which is April at the earliest for most of the country and later for northern shipping. If you find a queenless colony in early March, an overwintered nuc is the only queen available anywhere. That single fact is why sideliners do this.
Deadout replacement. Losses happen. A wintered nuc is a colony ready to move into the empty equipment as soon as the weather breaks, with drawn comb, a laying queen, and a population that grows immediately. Buying a package in April puts you six weeks behind a nuc that is already building.
Free increase. A strong overwintered nuc is often the fastest-growing unit in the yard in April, because it is small, has drawn comb, and has a young queen with nothing but room ahead of her. Many of them can be split again by late May.

The four constraints a small colony faces
Everything in this guide serves one of four physical problems, and understanding them makes the tactics obvious.

Notice what is not on the list: cold air itself. Honey bees survive extraordinary cold when they are dry, dense, well fed, and out of the wind. Colonies almost never freeze in the way beginners imagine; they starve two inches from food they could not reach, or they get soaked by condensation dripping off a cold lid. The other constraint that is really a precondition: mites. A nuc with a heavy varroa load in September is not going to make it regardless of how well you insulate it, because varroa damage shows up in the winter bees whose longevity the colony depends on. When to make them: late summer, young queens
The timing rule: make overwintering nucs early enough that they can build population and pack stores before the season closes, and late enough that they are not swallowed by robbing or a dearth. In most of the country that is July into early August, and in northern regions the window closes fast, so late June to mid July is safer.
The queen matters more here than in any other split. An overwintering nuc wants a young, well-mated, already-laying queen, not a virgin waiting on a mating flight in September. That means either a purchased mated queen or a queen from an earlier walk-away split that is proven laying by the time you set the nuc up. A nuc still trying to get a queen mated in late August is a nuc that will go into winter with almost no young bees, and the whole plan depends on winter bees.
The recipe for a nuc destined to winter, at setup: two to three frames of brood with a laying queen on them, two frames of stores, and a heavy shake of nurse bees, in a five-frame box that gets fed from that day forward. A late-summer nuc also has a specific job most beekeepers skip: rearing the winter bees. Winter bees are physiologically distinct from summer bees, longer-lived and fat-bodied, and they are reared in late summer and fall from well-fed larvae. That is why a nuc must be feeding in August and September, not just in October when you notice it is light.
Single nucs, double stacks, and divided boxes
Three configurations, and the choice mostly follows your climate.
Single five-frame nuc. One box, five frames. Simplest and the hardest to winter, because five frames cannot hold enough stores in a cold climate and the colony has no vertical room to move up into food. Workable in the South and the mild West with a candy board on top. Marginal north of about the Ohio River without help.
Double nuc stack. Two five-frame boxes stacked, ten frames total in a tall narrow column. This is the standard northern configuration and it is a genuinely different animal from a single: the cluster winters in the bottom box and moves up into the stores above, which is exactly how bees prefer to use winter food. Divided double, or two nucs in one box. A ten-frame box split down the middle with a solid divider, two colonies with separate entrances on opposite sides. Each cluster gets a shared interior wall that is warm rather than cold, which is meaningful at this scale, and the whole unit takes one lid, one stand, and one wrap. The tradeoff is that manipulating one side disturbs both.

Feed density: the hardest problem in a small box
A ten-frame deep can hold enough honey to winter a colony in the north. Five frames cannot, and that is the central difficulty of nuc overwintering. The solution is a combination of packing the box dense, going into winter with almost nothing but food and bees, and putting solid feed directly above the cluster.
Target state going into winter: the nuc's outer frames fully capped, the middle frames carrying brood in fall that becomes storage space as the brood emerges, and no empty comb. A five-frame nuc that is mostly full of empty drawn comb in October is a nuc that will starve in February, no matter how many bees it has.
Getting there: feed 2:1 syrup steadily from late summer through fall, in an in-hive feeder, until the box will not take any more. This is the one situation where aggressive feeding is unambiguously correct, because the colony physically cannot over-store a five-frame box the way a full hive can become syrup-bound. Then add solid feed. Once liquid feeding stops, put sugar above the cluster: a candy board sized to the nuc, a fondant slab on the top bars, or the mountain camp method of dry sugar on newspaper under a spacer rim. Check by heft, monthly. Lift the back of the nuc on a mild day. Overwintered nucs are light enough that heft is unusually informative, and a nuc that feels empty in January needs sugar on top of the cluster that week, not in March.
Insulation at small scale
Insulate the top first and most. Heat rises, the lid is where a cold surface meets warm moist air, and an insulated top does two jobs at once by keeping the cluster warmer and keeping the ceiling above dew point so condensation does not form and drip. If you do nothing else, do this.

Side insulation matters more on a nuc than on a full hive because the ratio of wall area to cluster is worse. Foam board taped or strapped to the sides, or a nuc tucked into an insulated outer shell, both work. Do not seal the box airtight in the process; you want the walls insulated and the air path from the entrance to an upper vent intact.

Moisture: the actual killer
A winter cluster produces water vapor continuously from metabolizing honey. In a hive with a cold lid, that vapor condenses on the underside of the cover and rains back onto the cluster, and cold wet bees die. Beekeepers who lose colonies to "the cold" have usually lost them to water, and in a small box, where air volume is limited and every surface is close to the cluster, the effect is amplified.
The quilt box is the classic solution: a rim above the inner cover filled with wood shavings or burlap, vented at the top, that absorbs rising moisture and lets it evaporate away while insulating the ceiling. It is a wonderfully low-tech answer to the problem and it is why the technique persists.
Upper ventilation gives moist air somewhere to go. A notch in the inner cover, a small upper entrance, or a shim providing a gap under the cover all work, and an upper entrance doubles as a way out when the lower entrance is blocked by snow or dead bees.
Tip the hive slightly forward. Any condensation that does form runs down the front wall and out the entrance instead of dripping onto the cluster. Free, easy, and effective.
Do not seal the hive up tight. The instinct to close every gap for warmth is exactly wrong. A sealed hive is a wet hive. The winter airflow you want is small, continuous, and upward. Wrapping, wind, and sun
Wrapping does two things: it blocks wind, which strips heat from hive walls faster than still air ever could, and a dark wrap absorbs winter sun, warming the box on clear days enough for the cluster to shift position and reach new stores. Both matter more for a nuc than a full hive.

Wind protection beats wrap thickness. Entrance, mice, and robbing
A five-frame colony has a fraction of the guard force of a full hive, so entrance management is not optional. Reduce the entrance to roughly a single bee width for winter. It cuts drafts, keeps mice out, and gives the small population a door it can actually defend.
Mice are a specific and common nuc problem, because a warm box with a small population and a wide entrance is exactly what a mouse wants in November. A metal guard is the answer, since mice chew wood and foam quickly. Fit it in early fall, before the first cold night sends them looking, and leave it on until spring. Robbing is a fall problem rather than a winter one, and it is how many overwintering nucs die in September before winter even arrives. A nuc being fed syrup during a dearth, next to strong hives, with a wide entrance, is a target. Feed inside the hive, keep the entrance small, feed everything in the yard at once, and consider a robbing screen on the nucs specifically.
Snow and dead bees block lower entrances. Winter mortality accumulates on the bottom board, and a small colony can seal its own door with its dead. An upper entrance is the insurance, and a quick clearing of the lower entrance with a stick on a mild day is worth doing whenever you walk past.

Winter monitoring without opening
The discipline is the same as with full colonies and matters more: every opening dumps heat a five-frame cluster cannot spare. Read the nuc from outside.
Heft. Lift the back an inch. This is the single most informative winter check and it takes three seconds. A nuc that feels light in January is in trouble and needs sugar on top now.
Listen. Ear or a stethoscope against the side wall on a cold day: a low hum means a living cluster, and a light knuckle rap should produce a brief rise in the buzz. Silence in January is a bad sign but not proof, since a cluster can be at the far end of the box.
Watch the entrance. On the first mild day above roughly 50 degrees, look for cleansing flights. Bees flying and defecating on a warm February afternoon is the best news you can get. A pile of dead bees outside the entrance is normal winter mortality being carried out and is a sign of life, not death.
The one legitimate opening. On a mild, calm, sunny day, cracking the lid to slide in a fondant slab or check the candy board takes fifteen seconds and is worth doing when heft says the nuc is light. Do not pull frames. Do not look for the queen. Add feed and close it.
If a nuc dies, do the postmortem before you clean the box, because the evidence tells you what to change for next winter: starvation with heads in cells, a wet moldy interior, a tiny cluster that was never viable, or the deformed wings and spotty remains of a mite collapse. Spring split-out
The payoff. A nuc that comes through winter alive is typically the fastest-developing unit in the yard by mid spring, and you have three ways to cash it in.
Promote it. Move the five frames into a full ten-frame deep as soon as the nuc is filling its box, usually when brood covers three or four frames and bees are crowding. Do it on a warm day, keep the frames in order, and add drawn comb where you have it. This is the standard path and it produces a normal full colony by early summer.
Use the queen. If a full colony comes out of winter queenless, the nuc's queen is the fix, and she is available immediately. Cage her, introduce her per how to requeen a hive, and combine the nuc's remaining bees onto the colony with newspaper.
Split it again. A strong overwintered nuc in a good spring can be split by late May, which is how nuc overwintering becomes compounding rather than merely defensive. The specific risk of an overwintered nuc in spring is swarming. A colony with a young queen, drawn comb, and a five-frame box in a strong April flow will fill and congest faster than anything else you own, and it will swarm out of a nuc without hesitation. Honest odds, and when to merge instead
Nucs winter less reliably than full colonies. That is simply true, and the gap widens the colder your climate gets. A well-prepared paired or doubled nuc in the Midwest can approach the survival rate of the full hives beside it; a single five-framer in an exposed spot in Minnesota with marginal stores is a long shot. Set expectations accordingly and make more nucs than you need.
Merge instead of wintering when: the nuc has a failing or unproven queen in September, the nuc cannot be packed dense with stores before cold weather, mite counts are high with no time to treat properly, or you simply do not have the insulation and pairing set up. In all of those cases the bees are worth more merged into a strong colony than lost as a nuc, and the technique is how to combine two hives.
Winter the nuc when: it has a young laying queen, three or more frames of bees in October, stores packed and solid feed on top, insulation and pairing arranged, and mites under control. Those five conditions are the honest checklist, and a nuc meeting all five is a reasonable bet in most of the country.
The strategic point, worth restating: this is insurance, not a hobby project. Set up overwintering nucs in July or early August in most regions, earlier in the far north. Use a mated laying queen rather than a virgin waiting to mate, because a nuc still queenless in late August will not rear the winter bees the plan depends on.
