What actually kills northern colonies

New keepers in cold regions worry about temperature, which is the one thing bees handle well. A wintering cluster holds roughly 90 to 95F at its core by shivering flight muscles, and it does that at outside temperatures far below zero, as long as three conditions hold: it has enough food within reach, it stays dry, and it is populated by healthy long-lived winter bees. Northern winter losses almost always trace to a failure in one of those three, not to the thermometer.

Varroa is the most common root cause and the least visible. Winter bees are reared in late summer and early fall, and they are physiologically distinct: fat-bodied, long-lived, built to last months rather than weeks. If they are reared in a colony with a high mite load, they emerge damaged and virus-loaded, and the colony dwindles through December and January until the cluster is too small to hold heat. The hive looks fine in October and is empty in February. That mechanism is why the August treatment is the winter treatment.

Starvation is second, and it is usually not an absence of honey in the hive. It is honey the cluster cannot reach: bees move upward through their stores in winter and cannot easily move sideways during a deep cold snap, so a cluster can starve inches from a full frame. Heavy stores and a vertical arrangement solve most of it.

Moisture is third and the most preventable. National loss surveys tracked by the Bee Informed Partnership have reported US annual colony losses in the range of 40 to 50 percent in recent years, and northern operations that address all three of these carry colonies through winter at rates far better than that. It is a solvable problem, not a lottery.

Condensation: the real winter killer

Here is the physics that decides your winter. A wintering cluster produces heat and water vapor as it metabolizes honey. That warm, moist air rises to the top of the hive and hits the underside of the cover, which in an uninsulated wooden hive is the coldest surface in the box. The vapor condenses there, and cold water drips straight back down onto the cluster. Wet bees cannot thermoregulate, and a soaked cluster in January is dead within days. This is the failure mode northern keepers describe when they open a hive in March and find a small, sodden cluster with plenty of honey overhead.

There are two ways to solve it, and you want one of them. Absorb the moisture with a quilt box: a shallow rim filled with wood shavings or similar material, sitting above the inner cover with vent holes at its sides, which takes up the vapor and lets it escape gradually. Or vent the moisture with an upper entrance or a notched inner cover turned notch-up, so the moist air leaves before it can condense. A third partial approach, insulating the top with a rigid foam board above the inner cover, keeps the ceiling warmer than the cluster's dew point so condensation forms on the walls instead, where it runs down harmlessly.

Most successful northern setups combine two of the three: an insulated or absorbent top plus a small upper vent. What you must not do is seal the hive up tight in the name of warmth. A perfectly sealed, uninsulated wooden box is the exact recipe for a rain event above the cluster. Tilt the hive slightly forward. A degree or two of forward tilt means any condensation that does form on the walls, and any rain or snowmelt at the entrance, runs out the front rather than pooling on the bottom board. It costs nothing and it is on every northern winter checklist for a reason.

Stores: how heavy is heavy enough

The number most beekeeping books give, 40 to 60 pounds of capped stores, is a temperate-zone number. In the northern tier, upper Midwest, northern New England, the Mountain West at elevation, and the Canadian border, the working target is higher: commonly cited ranges run roughly 60 to 90 pounds, because the cluster has to eat through five or six months rather than three or four, and because a long cold spring can extend the consumption period well past the first crocus.

Judging it: the heft test is the practical tool. Lift the back edge of the hive with two fingers. A properly provisioned northern hive in October should be genuinely difficult to lift that way, to the point that you are surprised. Calibrate your hand in the fall when you know what full feels like, then heft monthly all winter and note the change. Arrangement matters as much as quantity. Bees move up, not sideways, in the cold. Configure so that the cluster starts low in fall with capped honey directly above it, rather than beside it. The fall feeding deadline

Fall feeding is a race against temperature. Bees take 2:1 sugar syrup, evaporate it down, and cap it, and all three steps need warm-enough weather and active foragers. Once nights drop consistently into the 40s and days stop reaching the 50s, they largely stop taking syrup, and any uncapped syrup left in the comb can ferment. In much of the northern tier that means the practical window closes in late September to mid October, which in turn means you start in late August.

How to do it well: use 2:1 syrup, sugar to water by weight, not the 1:1 spring mix, because there is less water for the colony to evaporate. Feed in volume with a top feeder rather than a trickle from an entrance feeder, because the goal is to move gallons in a few weeks. Feed all colonies at once if you can, and feed at dusk, because fall feeding during a dearth is a robbing accelerant. Stop when the hives heft heavy, not when the calendar says so.

Northern keepers frequently harvest less than they could, and that is the correct instinct: honey left on the hive is better winter feed than anything you can mix, it is already capped, and it costs no labor. Wrapping and insulation, by zone

Wrapping is where new northern keepers want to start and where this guide puts it fourth, on purpose. A wrap does not warm the hive: the colony heats the cluster, not the box. What a wrap does is cut wind stripping heat off thin pine walls and, in dark-colored wraps, absorb a little solar gain on sunny winter days, which can help bees shift position and reach fresh stores. That is a real benefit, worth roughly the price of the wrap, and it is not a substitute for stores or moisture control.

Zones 3 to 4 (northern Minnesota, North Dakota, northern Maine, high Mountain West, Canadian border): wrap, insulate the top, and consider insulation on the sides as well. Wind breaks and siting for winter

A windbreak is free insulation and it is chronically underrated. Constant winter wind across an exposed hive strips heat continuously, which the cluster pays for in stores consumed. A solid barrier on the prevailing wind side, a fence line, a hedge, a row of straw bales, a stack of pallets with a tarp, cuts that loss meaningfully and costs nothing if you have the materials.

Northern siting has three other winter-specific requirements. Get the entrance out of the snow line: hives sit higher up north, and a stand that keeps the entrance above typical drift depth prevents the entrance from being sealed shut during a thaw-freeze cycle. Face entrances south or southeast where possible, both for morning sun and to keep drifting snow off the entrance. And put the apiary somewhere you can physically reach in February, because a monthly heft check across 200 yards of unplowed snow is a check that will not happen.

Cold-air drainage matters too: a hive at the bottom of a hollow sits in the coldest air on the property on still nights. A gentle slope or a slight rise is better than a low spot, and better still if it also has that south-facing morning exposure. The short build-up window: what changes in spring

Southern keepers get eight or nine months of buildup. Northern keepers might get four, and everything management-related compresses accordingly. Spring inspections start later, and the first one should be brief and purposeful on the first genuinely mild day: alive or not, queenright or not, stores adequate or not. That is the whole agenda; a long February inspection costs the colony heat it cannot spare.

Splits and increase have to happen earlier than a national calendar suggests, because a split made in July in Minnesota has no realistic chance of building enough population and stores to survive the winter. The northern rule of thumb is to split during or just before the main flow, giving the daughter colony the whole rest of the season to build. Overwintering nucs: the northern insurance policy

The counterintuitive northern practice worth adopting early: winter small colonies on purpose. A five-frame nuc, well provisioned and properly insulated, winters far better than beginners expect, because a smaller cavity is easier to heat and a nuc's cluster fills its box. Northern sideliners routinely winter nucs in pairs, sharing a wall for warmth, and use them the following spring to replace losses, requeen a failing colony, or boost a slow hive with a frame of brood.

The economics are the argument. If you winter two nucs and lose one production hive, you start spring at full strength and you did not spend $150 to $250 on a replacement nuc, and you did not wait until May for it. If you lose nothing, you have colonies to sell or expand with. This is how most northern keepers stop buying bees every year, and it is the transition from beginner to established keeper more than any other single practice.

Late-winter emergency feeding: candy boards and dry sugar

February and March are the starvation months. The cluster has eaten through most of its stores, brood rearing has restarted, which sharply increases consumption, and it is still far too cold to forage or to take syrup. A hive that hefts light in February needs food above the cluster within days, and liquid syrup is not the answer, because bees cannot evaporate and process it in the cold and it adds moisture to exactly the wrong environment.

Winter monitoring: what to do and what not to do

Winter beekeeping is a monthly walk, not a series of inspections. Each visit answers four questions without opening the hive. Is the entrance clear of dead bees and snow, so ventilation and cleansing flights are possible? Does the hive still heft heavy? Are the lids strapped and the wraps intact after the last storm? And on a mild sunny afternoon, is there flight activity, which is the best single sign a colony is alive?

Things that look alarming and are not: dead bees on the snow in front of the hive, which is housecleaning; yellow specks on snow, which are cleansing flights and a genuinely good sign; and no visible activity in a cold snap, which is simply a cluster doing its job. A stethoscope or a phone microphone against the box will confirm a hum if you need reassurance.

The one thing not to do is open the hive to look. Every winter opening spends cluster heat that was budgeted elsewhere and can break the cluster's position relative to its stores. If you must check on a mild day, crack the lid for seconds to confirm the cluster has honey above it, and close up. The only good reason to go in is to add emergency feed, and if you followed the last section that is already sitting there.

The spring dead-out audit

Losses happen, including to good beekeepers, and the difference between a keeper who improves and one who repeats the same winter is what they do in March with a dead hive. Do not clean it out immediately. Photograph it, look at it carefully with your mentor, and read the evidence, because a dead-out is a detailed account of what went wrong.

The classic signatures. A small cluster head-down in empty cells with honey elsewhere in the box means starvation, often the cluster-could-not-move version. A tiny cluster in a hive with abundant stores, few dead bees on the bottom board, and spotty brood the previous fall usually means varroa took the winter bees. May to June: the compressed build-up. Add space ahead of the colony, split during or just before the main flow, and get supers on early. This is the entire honey season in many northern regions.

July to August: harvest, then immediately the year's most important task: mite monitoring and treatment before winter bees are reared. Threshold guidance from extension programs runs around 2 to 3 mites per 100 bees, per the Honey Bee Health Coalition. Northern keepers should aim to be finished treating well before September.

September to October: fall feeding to weight against the deadline, mouse guards and entrance reducers on, moisture solution installed, wrap on after feeding ends, lids strapped, candy board staged. Then leave them alone and let five months of northern winter do what it does.

Key terms

Winter cluster
The ball of bees that forms in cold weather, shivering flight muscles to hold roughly 90 to 95F at the core while the outer layer insulates. The cluster heats itself, not the hive, which is why insulation helps at the margins and stores decide the outcome.
Condensation kill
The classic northern loss: warm moist air from the cluster condenses on a cold inner cover and drips back down, soaking bees that then cannot thermoregulate. Prevented by absorbing the moisture with a quilt box or venting it through an upper entrance.
Quilt box

Emergency winter feeding by laying newspaper on the top bars, pouring several pounds of dry granulated sugar on it, and misting lightly. The free version of a candy board, and nearly as effective.
Heft test
Judging stores by lifting the back edge of the hive with two fingers. A properly provisioned northern hive in October should be genuinely hard to lift. Calibrate your hand in fall, then heft monthly all winter.
Winter bees
The fat-bodied, long-lived bees reared in late summer and early fall that carry the colony to spring. They must be reared by a low-mite colony, which is why the August varroa treatment is functionally a winter task.
Overwintered nuc
A five-frame colony deliberately wintered as insurance and increase stock. Small colonies winter better than beginners expect, and a pair of them replaces spring losses without buying bees.

how cold is too cold for honey bees

Cold itself is rarely the limiting factor. A healthy cluster with adequate stores holds roughly 90 to 95F at its core at outside temperatures far below zero. What kills northern colonies is being wet, being light on stores, or being populated by winter bees damaged by varroa the previous August. Solve those three and the thermometer stops mattering much.
