When to feed, and when feeding is a mistake
Feeding is a tool for four situations, not a routine. New colonies with undrawn comb: a package or a nuc installed on foundation has no stores and no comb, and wax production is expensive, so syrup until the boxes are drawn is standard. Splits and swarms: same logic, plus a population that lost its foragers. Dearth: the mid-summer gap between flows, when a colony can burn through stores in two weeks. Do not use organic or unrefined sugar for the same reason. This surprises people. Less refined is worse here, not better. There is no bee-health upside to unrefined sugar and there is a documented downside.
Do not use powdered or confectioners sugar as feed. It contains cornstarch as an anticaking agent. Powdered sugar has a legitimate role as a dusting agent in a sugar-roll mite count, covered in mite monitoring tools, but it is not food.
Never feed honey from another colony or from the grocery store. Honey is the single best vector for American foulbrood spores, which survive for decades and cannot be cleaned out of woodenware. When to stop feeding
Stop when the supers go on. Always. This is the hard rule with no exceptions.
