Harvest gear is off by default on purpose: most first-year colonies keep everything they make, so the extractor can wait until year two.

Questions about beekeeping costs
How much does it cost to start beekeeping?
Most first-year beekeepers spend between about $600 and $1,300 for two hives including the bees. A shoestring single hive can start near $350, and a premium insulated two-hive setup with extraction gear can pass $2,000. The calculator on this page itemizes each path.
Why does the calculator recommend two hives?
A second colony is the only reliable fix for a queenless or failing hive: you can donate a frame of eggs and let them raise a queen. With one hive, the same problem usually means buying replacement bees next spring.
How much do bees themselves cost?
A 3-pound package with a queen typically runs about $100 to $175, and an established 5-frame nuc about $150 to $250, depending on your region and the year. Both are ordered in December through February for spring pickup.
Do I need a honey extractor in the first year?
Usually not. First-year colonies spend their energy drawing comb and building population, so most produce little or no surplus honey. That is why harvest gear is unchecked by default here.
What are the ongoing costs after year one?
Budget for mite treatments, feed, replacement queens, and frames or foundation as comb ages out. It is a fraction of the startup cost, generally low hundreds per hive per year.
