What nosema actually is

Nosema is not a bacterium and not a worm. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites, related to fungi, that can only reproduce inside a host cell. In honey bees they target the epithelial cells lining the ventriculus, the bee's midgut, which is the organ that does the actual work of digestion and absorption. A bee swallows spores in contaminated food or water, or while cleaning contaminated comb. Inside the gut, each spore fires a coiled polar filament into a gut cell and injects its contents. The parasite multiplies inside that cell, the cell eventually ruptures, and millions of new spores are released into the gut and passed out in the feces.

The consequences are metabolic rather than dramatic. An infected bee absorbs nutrition less efficiently and burns through its own reserves faster, so it lives a shorter life. Nurse bees with heavy infections develop poorer hypopharyngeal glands, so they feed brood less well. Infected colonies show elevated queen supersedure. None of that produces a photograph. It produces a colony that is quietly worse at everything, and a beekeeper who says the hive "just never took off this spring."

Two species dominate. Nosema apis is the classical one, tied to late-winter and spring peaks, to confinement, and to visible dysentery. Nosema ceranae, originally described from the Asian honey bee, spread widely through Apis mellifera colonies in the 2000s and is now the more commonly detected species across much of the US. It is less clearly seasonal, is frequently present without any dysentery at all, and that difference alone destroys the old field rule that streaking equals nosema.

What dysentery actually is

Dysentery is not a disease. It is a bee that cannot hold it any longer. A honey bee stores waste in its rectum and holds it until a cleansing flight, and that reservoir is large but finite. Two things fill it faster than normal: excess water, and indigestible solids. Both come mostly from what the colony is eating.

The classic sources of a high-residue winter diet are fermented or unripe stores, honeydew honey, which bees make from insect secretions on foliage rather than from nectar and which carries a much higher mineral and indigestible content, thin sugar syrup fed too late in the fall so the bees cannot cure it down, and stores that got wet in a damp hive. The other half of the equation is confinement: a long cold stretch with no flight weather means no cleansing flights, and even a colony on good stores eventually voids inside.

So brown or yellow streaking on the hive front, on the top bars, and across the frames tells you something real: this colony was confined too long, or its stores were poor, or its hive was too wet, or all three. That is genuinely useful management information. It is not a diagnosis of nosema, and it never was, because Nosema ceranae often produces no streaking while a perfectly parasite-free colony on honeydew stores can paint the front of the hive.

The relationship runs the other way too, which is the part worth remembering. Dysentery spreads nosema. Bees defecating inside the hive contaminate comb, and the workers who clean it up swallow spores. So a colony with both problems compounds them, and that is the real reason to take streaking seriously even though it is not itself a diagnosis.

The practical instruction that falls out of the table: when you see streaking, do not go shopping. Go check three things. What did this colony winter on, was the hive wet, and how long has it been since a flight day above roughly 50F? Those answers fix more colonies than anything else available to you.

Why field diagnosis fails, and what sampling really takes

Every experienced beekeeper has heard the field rules: streaked hive front means nosema, a K-wing bee means nosema, a bee with a swollen white gut means nosema. The first is unreliable for the reasons above. The second is a sign associated with several stressors and is not specific. The third requires dissecting the bee, and while a healthy midgut is tan and ridged while a heavily infected one can look pale and swollen, that read is subjective and easy to talk yourself into.

The honest position is the one every extension bee health program takes: nosema is diagnosed with a microscope. The eXtension bee health program and university programs including the University of Minnesota publish the same basic protocol we set out in the steps above: about 30 older bees, abdomens crushed in a measured volume of water, examined at around 400x for the distinctive rice-shaped spores, with a hemocytometer if you want an actual spores-per-bee number.

That protocol is not out of reach. A used compound microscope capable of 400x costs less than a bee suit, and a club that buys one becomes the diagnostic center for thirty members. But the alternative is real too: state apiary programs and federal bee research laboratories have long provided diagnostic services for beekeeper-submitted samples, and USDA Agricultural Research Service facilities are part of that history. Spores are common; disease is not automatic. Many healthy colonies carry detectable spores. What matters is a heavy load in a colony that is also dwindling, superseding queens, or failing to build. A count without a colony assessment is a number without a meaning.

The fumagillin question, answered honestly

For decades the standard answer to a nosema diagnosis in North America was fumagillin, fed in syrup in fall and sometimes spring. Beekeepers who learned the craft twenty years ago will tell you to buy it, and older articles all over the internet still describe it as routine.

That situation has changed, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Availability of fumagillin products for beekeeping in the United States has shifted in recent years, and both supply and label status are things you must verify for yourself, right now, with two sources: your state apiary program, and a reputable beekeeping supplier. We are not going to state what is currently registered, what is currently sold, or what may legally be applied in your state, because that is exactly the kind of claim that goes stale and gets a beekeeper in trouble.

Two further points belong on the record. First, research findings on antimicrobial efficacy against Nosema ceranae, as opposed to Nosema apis, have been mixed, and some work has raised questions about dosing effects, so the old assumption that a fall treatment simply solves the problem is not well supported for the species that now dominates. Second, any antimicrobial use in a food-producing animal comes with residue and oversight considerations, and honey is food. If you conclude that you need a product, that conclusion belongs in a conversation with your state apiary program and a veterinarian, not in a shopping cart.

Lever one: young queens and good stock

The most consistent pattern in colonies that shrug off nosema is a strong, young queen laying well into fall and restarting hard in spring. Nosema pressure and queen quality interact: infected colonies supersede more, and a colony that supersedes late in the season may go into winter with an unmated or poorly mated queen, which is a different disaster wearing the same clothes.

The practical rule for a backyard operation is to requeen on a schedule rather than on an emergency, roughly every two seasons, and to breed or buy from stock that overwinters well in your climate. Lever two: a dry hive

Moisture is the through-line of winter colony health. Warm, wet air rises off the cluster, hits the cold underside of the lid, condenses, and falls back down as cold water. Wet bees chill, wet stores ferment, fermented stores raise the residue load in the gut, and a chilled colony flies less on marginal days. That chain ends in dysentery whether or not a single nosema spore is involved.

Lever three: winter stores that do not cause dysentery

What a colony eats for four months decides how much waste it accumulates. Three rules cover it.

Ripened stores, not thin syrup. Syrup fed too late in the fall never gets cured down and capped, and uncapped syrup can ferment. Watch out for honeydew stores. In regions and seasons with heavy honeydew flows, the resulting dark stores carry a much higher indigestible content and are a classic dysentery source in a long winter. A colony that runs out of accessible stores dies of starvation regardless of gut health, and one that has to break cluster to reach food in a cold snap often does not make it back. Lever five: stop stressing the colony

Every published risk list for nosema ends up including stress, which sounds like hand-waving until you enumerate it. Colonies get stressed by being moved, by being opened repeatedly in cold weather, by being split too aggressively, by dearth without feeding, by being crowded into too little space or rattling around in too much, by heavy mite loads, and by chronic exposure to a poor site.

Two of those deserve highlighting. Varroa is a stressor that dwarfs most others, and a colony carrying a heavy mite load and its associated viruses is a colony that will express every other problem it has; the fight is timed in the varroa timing guide and explained in the virus guide. Winter inspections are a stressor with almost no informational payoff: cracking a lid in January to look chills the cluster and tells you very little. Heft the hive from behind for weight, watch the entrance on flight days, and leave it closed.

The reason all of this matters for nosema in particular is the arithmetic of bee lifespan. Winter survival is a race between the rate at which winter bees die and the date the queen restarts laying. Nosema shortens those bees' lives. So does varroa damage. So does a cold, wet hive. Each of them moves the same number in the same direction, and a colony loses when enough of them stack.

Reading the streaks: what a spring diagnosis really looks like

Put it together with an actual March scene. You open the yard on the first warm day. Hive 1 has light spotting around the entrance and a strong flight of bees. Hive 2 is streaked heavily across the front and up the box, with a modest flight. Hive 3 is silent, with streaking inside on the top bars and a fist-sized cluster of dead bees.

Hive 1 is normal. Bees that have been confined take cleansing flights and some of them do not make it far enough from the hive. Note it and move on.

Hive 2 is telling you about its winter: long confinement, poor or wet stores, or a damp box. Plan a spring assessment, check what it is living on, resolve to fix the moisture setup before next fall, and sample for nosema if it fails to build over the next month. Requeening is on the table if the buildup stalls.

Hive 3 is a deadout and gets an autopsy rather than a theory. Was there honey within reach of the cluster? Was the cluster tiny? Are there mite frass deposits in the cells, deformed wings among the dead, mouse damage, or mold? How to Sample a Colony for Nosema

    Collect the right bees

    Take about 30 older bees, foragers returning to or leaving the entrance, rather than nurse bees off a brood frame. Older bees have had more time to accumulate infection, so entrance samples detect it earlier than brood-nest samples.

    Sample when it counts

    Late winter and early spring, when nosema levels classically peak, and again any time a colony fails to build or dwindles without an obvious cause. Sample several colonies rather than one, so you can compare.

    Preserve the sample

    Put the bees in a sealed bag or vial. Freeze them if you cannot process the sample the same day, and label each sample with the hive and the date.

    For a clean read, pull the abdomens off the bees before crushing. The spores are in the gut, and skipping the thorax and head keeps debris and muscle tissue out of the slide.
