This first pass catches bee parts, wood chips, and the bulk of the debris. Work fast, since wax sets quickly on cold cloth, and prewarm the strainer if you can.

Let it cool undisturbed and lift the block
Leave the container completely undisturbed until fully cool, ideally overnight. The wax rises and solidifies as a single block above the water, with fine debris settling on its underside. Lift the block off, invert it, and scrape the dirty underside with a knife or a spoon back into your slumgum pile. That scrape alone removes a surprising amount of contamination.

Melt a second time and filter fine
Remelt the scraped block with fresh water and pour it through a finer medium: several layers of cheesecloth, a paint strainer bag, or a filter paper in a funnel for very fine work. This second pass is what turns hobby wax into the even golden blocks that cast professional candles. For cosmetic-grade wax destined for lip balm, run a third pass through the finest medium you have.

Pour the filtered wax into silicone molds, loaf pans, or lined containers, sized to whatever you actually use: one-pound blocks are convenient, and small bars are easier to weigh out later. Let them cool slowly and undisturbed, since fast cooling can crack a block. Pop them out when fully cold and label each with the grade, cappings or brood, and the year.

Store the blocks and deal with the slumgum
Wrap finished blocks or bag them and store somewhere cool and dark; beeswax keeps essentially indefinitely but attracts dust and, in a warm shed, wax moths. Slumgum, the dark residue left in the filters, can go on the compost, be used as a fire starter, or be saved as swarm-trap lure. Clean the pot while it is still warm, since cold wax welds itself to everything.

can you melt beeswax on the stove

Beeswax melts around 144 to 147 degrees Fahrenheit and has a listed flash point near 400 degrees, and a burner covers that gap quickly and unevenly.
