Unlike hives, frames, or treatments, an extractor does not need buying again when you add colonies, so its cost per pound falls every year you keep beekeeping. Pick manual if / pick electric if / pick radial if

Pick a manual tangential if: you run one to three hives; you want the cheapest honest entry; you value having nothing that can break; storage space is tight; you are not sure yet whether harvest day is something you enjoy; you can borrow a bigger machine on the rare year you need one.

Pick an electric tangential if: you run three to six hives; you want to uncap while the drum spins; cranking is physically difficult for you; you harvest more than once a season; you want the middle option and do not need radial capacity yet.

Pick a radial if: you run seven or more hives; you handle seventy or more frames per harvest; frame flipping is the part of the day you resent; you have somewhere to store a large machine and somewhere to bolt it down; you intend to keep expanding.

Pick none of them if: it is your first season. Borrow the club's, learn what you need, and buy next year with real numbers instead of guesses.

Before you spin anything: ripeness

Sizing is only half of harvest planning. The other half is not extracting honey that is not ready. Honey is ripe when the bees have reduced its moisture enough to be shelf stable and have capped the cells; the widely used threshold is below roughly 18.6 percent moisture, above which fermentation becomes a real risk (Wikipedia).

Extension guidance on harvesting and processing covers the same ground and is worth reading before your first season (Bee Health extension community). In practice: harvest frames that are capped across most of their surface, and if a frame is partially uncapped, do the shake test by holding it horizontally and giving it a firm shake. The extraction sequence itself is simple once ripeness is settled: uncap into a tub, load balanced, ramp the speed, spin, flip if tangential, drain through a double sieve into a food-grade bucket, let it settle for a day or two so air bubbles rise, then jar. Capacity figures are the manufacturer's listed frame counts. A 2/4 frame machine means two deep frames or four shallow ones, which is a smaller machine than the name suggests.

Key terms

Tangential extractor
A basket that holds frames flat against the drum wall, so only the outward-facing side empties. Every frame must be turned around and spun a second time. Standard on entry and mid-tier machines.
Radial extractor
A basket that holds frames like spokes on a wheel, so both faces empty in one spin. No flipping. The single biggest labor difference in the category, and the reason to move up at high frame counts.
2/4 frame capacity
Two deep frames or four shallow or medium frames, not four frames of any size. The most misread specification in extractor listings, and a real argument for running medium supers.
Duty cycle
How long a motor can run before it needs to rest. Inexpensive extractor motors are intermittent-duty, so spin in cycles, use loading time as rest, and stop if the housing gets hot.
Uncapping
Slicing or scratching wax cappings off sealed honey cells before extraction. It is the true bottleneck of harvest day, and the reason a bigger drum alone rarely shortens the work.
Drawn comb
Comb the bees have already built out. Extraction returns it intact, and colonies refill drawn comb far faster than they build new, which is why gentle spinning is worth the extra minute.
Honey gate
The valve at the bottom of the drum that drains honey into a bucket. Check that its height clears a five-gallon bucket before harvest day, not during it.
Ripe honey
Honey the bees have dried below roughly 18.6 percent moisture and capped. Extracting unripe honey risks fermentation regardless of what machine you spin it in.
