How to use this calendar (and how to shift it for your region)
Every month below has three parts: the one job that matters, the smaller chores around it, and what the bees themselves are doing, because the bees' biology is the real calendar and the months are just our labels for it. The whole system keys off two local dates you should learn from your club before anything else: your average last spring frost and the start of your main nectar flow. In our baseline region those land in mid-to-late April and May respectively. Everything spring-side counts backward from bee arrival; everything fall-side counts backward from your first hard frost.
Regional shifting, in one paragraph each direction. Gulf South and low-elevation Southeast (zones 8 to 9): slide spring tasks four to six weeks earlier, expect packages and nucs in March, plan for a hot-summer dearth that behaves like a second winter (feed and robbing precautions), and treat "winter prep" as a lighter October affair, though varroa discipline is year-round because brood is year-round. Northern tier and high elevation (zones 3 to 4): slide spring three to four weeks later, compress the buildup season, take fall feeding and insulation dead seriously, and favor overwintered local nucs over packages. Arid West: flows track irrigation and elevation more than the calendar; water sources are a legal and neighborly obligation, and the summer dearth is the defining management event. December: order your bees, start your education
The one job: get on a bee producer's list. Reputable nuc and package suppliers open orders around now and sell out, the good local ones sometimes within weeks. January: buy the equipment while the sales are on
The one job: order everything with a screwdriver attached. February: build, paint, and learn your last-frost date
The one job: assembly. Do it in February for two reasons: paint needs weeks to cure and off-gas before bees move in, and assembly always surfaces one missing or split part, which is a February annoyance and an April crisis.

March: set the apiary, mix nothing yet, resist nothing later
The one job: the site. Stands set and leveled (16 to 18 inches high; options in stands and wraps), hives positioned with entrances east or southeast, windbreak and flyway barrier in place, and the water source established and filling now, because bees imprint on the first reliable water they find and you want it to be yours, not the neighbor's pool. Walk the mowing pattern; you will be doing it in a veil all summer.

June: add space ahead of the flow, start counting mites
The one job: stay ahead on space. The main flow is on, and a colony that fills its boxes with nectar before you add the next one starts thinking about swarming, or simply stops growing. When the second deep is 70 to 80 percent drawn, strong first-year colonies can take a medium super; many first-year colonies will not get there, and that is fine. The other job that starts now and never stops: varroa monitoring. First alcohol wash or sugar roll this month, half a cup of bees from a brood frame, counted honestly, and monthly from here through October. The threshold consensus from extension programs runs around 2 to 3 mites per 100 bees, per the Honey Bee Health Coalition guide. Counting in June is what makes August treatable instead of tragic. July: the dearth, robbing, and the patience month
The one job: manage the dearth. August: the month that decides winter
The one job, and the year's most important: treat for varroa. The bees that will carry your colony through winter, the fat, long-lived winter bees, are reared starting late this month and through September, and they must be reared by a low-mite colony or they arrive damaged and virus-loaded, which is the mechanism behind most November-to-February dead-outs. Count first; treat at or approaching threshold, and in a first year we would treat on principle at any meaningful count. The one job: leave them alone, informatively. In late winter, on a mild day, a quick peek under the lid (seconds, not minutes) can confirm the cluster has stores overhead; moving frames of honey next to a stranded cluster has saved many a March colony. March again: the report card, and what year two looks like
On the first sustained mild days, your first-anniversary inspection: alive or not, queenright or not, stores or empty. If both hives made it, congratulations sincerely, you outperformed the national numbers; recent US surveys tracked by the Bee Informed Partnership have reported annual losses around 40 to 50 percent. If you lost one, autopsy it with your mentor (tiny cluster head-down in cells means starvation; a shrunken fall colony with deformed wings means varroa got the winter bees) and reuse the drawn comb, which is the dead colony's real bequest, for a spring nuc or a split from the survivor. If you lost both, you are in the largest club in beekeeping; the difference between quitters and beekeepers is the second order placed that week.
